My January Catch Up!

So it's coming up to February already.... I've been a bad blogger already this year- I hold my hands up.

Firstly I have finished the Evesham Illustration Society logo (hurrah!), see above :) I'm really happy with the logo, I think it is definitely something good to start with and can evolve as the society does over time :)

The logo is about support. It represents the Society being very strong and propping up the words Evesham and Illustration which are thin and shown as fragile letters. The words are relying on the support of the Society to keep them up right and stable, as Evesham Illustrators need the support of each other (the society). It is a visual representation of the Society supporting Evesham Illustrators.

I have been working at a local Cinema over the past few months which partly explains why I've been so quiet as I have been really busy. Over Christmas I was juggling 3 part time jobs, crazy. Unfortunately the Thorntons store I had been working in for nearly a year (which I loved) closed down a few weeks ago, another shop which is empty on the high street :( On the bright side now I have a Saturday job and I work week days and evenings at The Regal Cinema, which is a lovely 1930's Art Deco cinema, a real treat if you're ever in the area!!

I have very nearly finished my fold out CV, portfolio box and website so keep your eyes peeled for when its all finished! and then I will finally be applying for design jobs :) Can't wait to get a lovely day job. In the mean time here's a little peak!

(My lovely fold out CV)

(My portfolio box..ekkk)

(Website ideas)

I have been trying to link in my 'cm Illustration' logo into the theme of my CV, portfolio box and logo. So I have used set squares and rulers etc to re-enforce my name and logo. I am trying to make the presentation of my work to be unique and memorable. The fold out CV's are only for giving out at the end of an interview, something for them to keep and remember me by. I have designed a regular CV to attach to emails which is in the same design but in a standard A4 format. Hence why I have revamped my blog recently, everything is all starting to fit into place nicely :) Watch this space!

Yep this is my contribution to all of the snowy photos that have been circling the web so much recently.  Admittedly a little late...

Evesham Illustration Society- 'Beginning'

Over the past few weeks I've been very busy with my other two part time jobs (they're like buses I'm sure!- all or nothing) So unfortunately I haven't had very much to report on for a while! I have been working on a logo for EIS as you can see above. I'm really enjoying for the first time getting the opportunity to play around with hand rendered type, its sooo much fun! Can't wait to show the final logo to you all :)

Yesterday Evesham Illustration Society's very first exhibition 'Beginning' opened in Evesham Library. I had a very exciting and ambitious marketing plan for the exhibition that I drew up months and months a go but unfortunately the date has creeped up on me and I've let life get in the way! The exhibition though is up for 4 weeks so if you're near the area please drop into have a look! :) it's certainly been a learning experience organising the exhibition and trying to get everyone together and also buying the frames and hanging the work, but it will be very valuable :) I'm very proud we've done it and I'm looking forward to the second exhibition in the new year! :) (Sorry about the bright/dark photos, the light wasn't good!)

My Stained Glass Workshop...

Last week I attended a two day workshop in Stained Glass. I've always really classed myself as quite a creative soul so I've decided to extend my skills to different crafts. I knit and sew and I'm also learning upholstery and jewellery making :)

(My coaster when the glue was drying)

We began with practicing the cutting technique, cutting in straight lines, semi circles, circles and curves. We practiced on thin 2mm clear glass first and then moved on to cutting coloured glass. Because coloured glass has gone through the process and it has been treated it is more difficult to work with, so with our practice pieces we made coasters by sticking them to a clear pain of glass. As with my illustration or I wanted to try and keep mine simple but also with lots of variety and texture going on! :) I'm really happy with this one.

(My coaster as it is now- with the clay drying)

I then filled in the gaps with clay mixed with charcoal powder. I'm now cleaning it every other days for four days and then leaving it in a cool place for a week so it can dry fully :)

(An idea from the Inspiration Folder)

We then moved on to the main project, this could be a small window or a series of small things that could hang together. I love doing a series of things as I really enjoy the continuity so the latter really appealed to me! I looked though the Tutor's 'Inspiration Folder' and came across this cup and saucer and cupcake idea!

(Deciding on my design)

I realised I could pretty easily adapt this and make it my own. What with My Dessert Gallery (365Project) I seem to have cakes and tea on the brain at the moment- not to mention the new series of The Great British Bake Off has started!, I can't get away from it! :)

(All cut and ready to Copper Foil!)

The Tutor then blow up my drawings on a photocopier so they were roughly the correct size to work from when cutting the glass. I could then trace the shape on to the glass with a pen which I could then wipe off later.

(After Copper Foiling)

I then stuck copper foiling tape all the way round the edge of the glass and rubbed it down thoroughly as I needed to make it water tight.

(My finished stained glass pieces)

By using a Soldering Iron I set all of my glass pieces together and then they were ready to hang :) Because I was melting really really hot metal on to my glass it dried almost instantly -so the cutting and the copper foiling took the most amount of time!

My stained glass hanging pride of place in my little studio :)

I hope you've enjoyed reading about my little Short Course, I'd love to hear what you think :)

How I Create My Dessert Gallery Images :)

Blackberry and Almond Meringue (from bbcgoodfood.com/)

I thought I'd give you a example of how I create My Dessert Gallery images seeings as I've now created so many and some of you may be interested!

First of all I do lots of research to find a recipe photo of something that has been baked (and something I haven't already illustrated!). I have to think about the angle of the food, the colours, the composition, and also the light. If those things are already strong in the image creating my own interpretation of the image is enjoyable and also I find it much more inspiring working with a good researched photo.

Usually I start off with sketching out roughly the basic shape of the image I am creating to give myself a form to work with (this often changes a little as the image develops).

I then add paints or collage elements to my work to start building up the colours and the form. In this image I used these things in the photo above, which consist of coloured pencils (some watercolour pencils), Aqua Tone which is similar, paints, fabric and a mechanical pencil. I have taken to using my trusty mechanical pencils as I realized I was spending too much time sharpening my pencils -plus I kept mislaying my sharpener (I'm sure it used to grow legs and walk off on its own!)

At this stage although I only used material on this image I also use many other different materials depending on the image and the colours I'm working with. I have a collection of collage materials which consist of lace, wallpaper, sweet wrappers, ribbon, string, glitter, sequins, cassette tape, magazines, newspapers, papers, nail varnish, wrapping paper, plastic bags and many other mad things! I like the collage materials I use to slightly dictate the feel the image has- this is great fun and when I often make a big mess!

My final image (Day 225 Blackberry and Almond Meringue)

I then scan the image in to photoshop and touch up the colours and also tighten up the image by adding some detail with my very trusty Bamboo Tablet. Ta daaa! All finished! :)

I am a drawer at heart although I did create quite a distinct and abstract collage style at university, through My Dessert Gallery I have tried to combine my drawing style with my collage style. This process shows how I have managed to combine the two. I generally use this process for My Dessert Gallery as it is a quick and simple process to use for me to create an image in a matter of minutes-my usual process when working on a project is different, but maybe thats something I should leave for another blog post! I hope you've found my process interesting and I hope you will share what you think and what your creative process is :)

I have really enjoyed the Olympics being held in London and the hard work and obvious unconditional dedication that the individuals and teams had to their sport was a real inspiration. I'm going to bottle that joy and hope to burst it into my illustrations very very soon. It makes you truly realise that with confidence, hard work and a passion for what you do you really can accomplish anything! :)
